Lucas Di Grassi had a crazy Hong Kong ePrix, as the Brazilian driver managed to fight from 19th place to finish in second, despite having to pit early to change his front wing.
The Brazilian was left stunned when he realised he actually finished the race in second place, as the 31-year old commented after the race that he had to drive so conservatively to make it to the end.
“I don’t know how I finished second,” said Di Grassi. ” I thought my race was over when I hit Ma Qing Hua, as the front wing was broken and I knew I would be called into the pits to change it.
“The mechanics did a fantastic job to change my nose very quickly, which kept me on the lead lap, which meant I was still in the race.
“I asked over the radio if we were just fighting to get the fastest lap, but the team told me no and to keep pushing. Then the safety car came out, but we were right on the edge of the pit stop window. We had nothing to lose, so we pitted early and gained a lot of time back when everybody else pitted.
“So I had to conserve so much energy in the final stint. Amazingly, I was technically first once everybody pitted, but Buemi caught me so quickly, as I was conserving my energy and he passed me easily.
“We got a bit lucky as quite a few other drivers pitting a lap later than I did, so they had to be easy on their energy as well towards the end which allowed me to stay in second.”
Di Grassi has now scored 14 podium finishes in Formula E, as the Brazilian looks to become the Formula E champion at the third time of trying.
