Sebastien Buemi has ended the first practice session fastest but was the only driver to conduct a 200kW lap time in the first session of the day.
The quickest 170kW lap time was Jose Maria Lopez, who was three-tenths clear of Jean-Eric Vergne who ended the session third.
Bad start for Virgin
The session, only lasted two minutes before Sam Bird caused a red flag after stopping at the exit of turn one. The British driver abandoned his car, which left him with one car to do the remainder of the session.
Once the session was underway again, it was not long until the yellow flag was waving again, as the other DS Virgin Racing car of Jose Maria Lopez crashed into the wall at turn one.
The Argentine was able to reserve out of the wall, with no significant damage to the car and continued on his way.
After the first 15 minutes of the session, it was Nick Heidfeld that was quickest, but due to the early stoppages, the lap times were still tumbling.
Closing stages of the session
Sam Bird found his rhythm with 25 minutes of the session remaining, as the Brit set three quick laps times to go first, three-tenths clear of Nelson Piquet Jr.
Lopez then displaced his teammate at the top of time sheets by 0.001 of a second quicker than Bird.
However, in the closing stages of the session, it was the familiar names that rose to the top as Sebastien Buemi and Lucas Di Grassi moved into the top two, with Buemi leading the way by 0.009 of a second.
Vergne beat Buemi’s lap by two-tenths of a second, but Lopez smashed the Techeetah driver’s lap time shortly after by three-tenths of a second.
Buemi was the only driver to set a 200kW lap. The Swiss driver went seven-tenths clear of Lopez, but the Renault e.Dams won’t be too happy with his lap, as he made a mistake in the second sector.
