Sam Bird has won the first ever New York ePrix after a great drive from the British driver to see off Jean-Eric Vergne
Stephane Sarrazin came home in third place after Daniel Abt retired from the race on the final lap, as the Frenchman stole third place from the German driver.
Alex Lynn who started on pole retired from the race after a driveshaft failure, while both Mahindra drivers failed to score a point after Rosenqvist spun out and a suspension failure for Heidfeld.
Lucas Di Grassi has now closed the gap to 20 points to Sebastein Buemi, as the Audi Sport ABT driver finished fourth, as Buemi misses both races in New York.
Buemi’s replacement Pierre Gasly was able to take away six points for finishing in seventh, and Adam Carroll scored his first point for Jaguar.
The start of the race
The first lap was full of instances as the start was like a touring car race as drivers bumped into each other. Nicolas Prost lost out the most as he fell to 19th with damage and Mitch Evans broke his right suspension and was out of the race.
Daniel Abt was able to jump Alex Lynn at the turn one. the German had the inside line and got a better start than the Englishmen and was able to take the lead.
Felix Rosenqvist was able to move up to 11th on the first lap after starting from 17th place after a poor qualifying.
Abt was not able to pull a big gap to the two Ds Virgin drivers, but the young German was conserving his energy far better than the two Brit’s behind him.
After ten laps, Lynn allowed Sam Bird through and the Brit was able to catch Abt quickly and applied pressure to German driver.
Bird was able to get passed Abt at turn five on the inside to take the lead of the race. Heidfeld also moved up to third after passing Lynn.
Lynn started to fall back as the Brit was struggling with his energy management. Stephane Sarrazin was also having a strong race as was up to sixth place right behind Lynn.
Vergne passed Heidfeld to regain third place on lap 18, as the Techeetah driver launched his attack before the pit stop window.
Pit stop window
Sarrazin was the big winner from the pit stop window as he jumped two places to fourth. Rosenqvist also passed Di Grassi in the pit stop window to move up to sixth place.
Disaster for Lynn, as a drive shaft failure ended his race after such a strong first outing in Formula E.
Di Grassi was all over the back of Rosenqvist, but the Brazilian was unable to find a way past the Swedish driver after the pit stop window.
However, Di Grassi was able to force Rosenqvist into a mistake. The Swedish driver lost the rear end at turn two and smashed into the barrier.
The Mahindra driver was forced to pit to replace his rear wing as he ripped his off during the impact.
The day went from bad to worse for Mahindra racing as he dropped out the race due to a broken suspension on the rear right.
This brought out the safety car with six laps remaining. The safety car came in with two laps remaining.
That started a sprint race, and it was Sarrazin who capitalised on Abt car breaking down to finish on the podium.
Bird crossed the line first to win the first ever New York ePrix.
