Lucas Di Grassi managed to overturn a 32 point gap to Sebastien Buemi in the final four races of the season to clinch the season three title.
However, Buemi missed the double header in New York, and with that the chance to play for an extra 58 points to help the Swiss driver defend his crown.
The Renault e.Dams driver was forced to miss the event due to poor planning by the FIA, Formula E and the World Endurance Championship, as they broke their gentlemen agreement of not racing on the same day.
Buemi’s commitments to Toyota in the WEC championship denied him the opportunity to defend his title despite winning six of the 12 races on this year’s calendar.
Now there may be an asterisk over this year’s championship saying, Di Grassi became Champion, but it should have been Buemi’s due to the clash between Formula E and the WEC.
However, there is an old saying that “you have to be in it to win it”. That was exactly what Lucas Di Grassi did, and it helped him secure his first Formula E championship after three years of trying.
Driver’s taking Formula E more seriously
Now we are not saying that the driver’s don’t take this championship seriously, but if they want to become champion and fight for wins and podiums they can’t afford to miss an event.
Therefore, drivers like Sam Bird who did choose Formula E over the WEC race for the New York ePrix, Felix Rosenqvist, and Jean-Eric Vergne who drive in a number of different series. They may think twice before deciding to miss a Formula E race if there’s a clash between another championship they take part in.

With season four set to be an evolution year, rather than a revolution. The grid may get even closer together, and these drivers have the potential to win races and championships in Formula E.
Now that they have seen Buemi miss out on a title everybody thought was his. They will have to think differently if they are in a championship fight next season in Formula E if there’s another clash.
With more manufacturers joining the sport. Formula E will start to become driver’s main priority, as the sport continues to grow and develop into an elite status in motorsport which it deserves.
