Former IndyCar and GP2 driver Luca Filippi will join Oliver Turvey at NIO Formula E Team in season four, replacing season one champion Nelson Piquet Jr.
Filippi made his name in the now-rebranded GP2 Series, finishing as vice-champion in 2011 while also finishing runner-up in Auto GP the same year.
The following year he made the move stateside to IndyCar, where he took a solitary podium in 2015 with Carpenter Fisher Hartman Racing.
The Italian has already run a private test with the team alongside a number of other drivers that includes Harry Tincknell, Adam Carroll and Ma Qing Hua.
“Let me firstly thank everyone in NIO for the great opportunity given to me to race in the FIA Formula E Championship,” explained Filippi. It is a new electric world for me and a new racing system oriented to the future that is full of talent and clean technology, so I am extremely excited to become a part of it. During our first test run together in Spain I immediately had a great feeling with the car and all the people in the team. To join NIO for S4 is a dream come true and I am very much looking forward to working with Oliver and Gerry and starting this journey with everyone in the NIO Formula E team.”
NIO’s announcement leaves only Andretti and Venturi left to unveil their drivers for the season, with Andretti running Antonio Felix da Costa, Alexander Sims and Tom Blomqvist in testing, while Venturi will test Maro Engel, James Rossiter, Edoardo Mortara and Michael Benyahia.
