Jose Maria Lopez looks set to replace Nell Jani at Dragon Racing after Jani decided to part ways with the American team earlier this week.
Lopez raced Formula E with the Ds Virgin team during the 2016/17 campaign but was dropped by the British team in favour of rookie Alex Lynn after just one season in the electric single-seater series.
Sources close to Formula E Zone indicate that Lopez is the most likely candidate for the drive, but former Dragon Racing driver Mike Conway who has a communicating role with Eurosport for the 2017/2018 season was also considered a candidate for the drive.
Lopez was disappointed to lose his drive in the series and admitted that he was eager to get back in the car if an opportunity arose.
Jani’s exit from the Dragon team after just one race weekend has now created a surprise opportunity for Lopez to make that return.
The departure of Faraday Future and Dragon Racing being unable to secure a tie-up with Porsche seems to a contributing factor for Jani to leave the American team.
Jani is a contracted Porsche driver and his arrival at Dragon Racing fulled speculation that Porsche would join the American team, which hasn’t been the case. Whereas Mercedes who will join the series alongside Porsche for the 2019/2020 season has partnered with Venturi.
Also, BMW is strengthening their ties with Andretti this season. Dragon Racing had a tough opening weekend in Hong Kong and are now the only team on the grid without a significant technical partnership, which may cause them to become Formula E’s backmarker team if they are unable to find a technical partnership.
