Jean-Eric Vergne wins a thrilling race in Punta Del Este as he saw an almighty attack from Lucas Di Grassi that started from the first lap.
Di Grassi was within one second for the majority of the race as the Brazilian tried everything to pass the Frenchman but just could not find a way.
Sam Bird ended the race in third after a stunning drive to catch the two leaders, but the Englishmen got caught on energy on the final lap and had to back off.
Felix Rosenqvist, Vergne’s nearest rival could only manage fifth place which extends Vergne’s lead in the championship to 30 points over the Swedish driver.
Mitch Evans also drove a great race from 18th on the grid to finish in fourth place. The Kiwi crossed the line with 0% energy and will need to ensure he is on the right side of the regulations to ensure he keeps his fourth place.
It was a clean start for the race as Vergne held of Di Grassi into the first corner and was able to keep the reigning champion behind.
Rosenqvist wanted to move forward at the start of the race but ended up going back three places back. His teammate Nick Heidfeld was once again hit by technical gremlins and caused a safety car to retrieve his Mahindra on lap four.
Sebastien Buemi had hit the wall and broke a steering rod in his car. The Swiss driver had to wrestle his car around the track to bring it back to the pit lane. The Renault e.Dams driver race was over as he could not finish the race in his second car.
Pit stop window
Di Grassi was right under the gearbox of Vergne’s car as the driver’s entered the pit stop window. The two drivers came out inches apart, but Vergne maintained the lead of the race.
Di Grassi tried to overtake Vergne on the opening lap of the second stint, but the Audi driver locked up and had to lost a second into turn 17 and had to catch the tEcheetah driver back up.
Daniel Abt was running in third, but his seat belt was not correctly fastened, and he had to pit again to fix it, and with it, a high scoring points finish.
Evans overtook Rosenqvist after he made a mistake using his fanbosst to try and past Alex Lynn.
Bird caught the top two in the closing stages of the race but could not challenge for the win on the final lap due to being short on energy.
Di Grassi tried to find a gap but was unable to, and Vergne took his second victory of the season.
