Nelson Piquet Jr ends Practice 1 fastest in Rome which ended under red flag conditions after Alex Lynn crashed at Turn 1 with five minutes remaining.
Lynn was beginning to push on a flying lap, but locked the fronts and slid into the barrier damaging the left front suspension and front wing of his DS Virgin Racing car.
Jose Maria Lopez also hit the wall during the session at Turn 4, but the Dragon Racing driver only slightly damaged the rear right and crawled his way back to the pitlane.
No driver conducted a 200kW lap time during FP1, which means in the final 30-minute practice session will see all the conducting a qualifying simulation.
This was the first chance for everyone to learn the Rome street-course for real and Piquet Jr managed to find his groove instantly and was one second clear of the field.
Mitch Evans was Piquet’s Jr nearest challenger in the second Jaguar Racing car but ended the session third after Sam Bird jumped to second in the closing seconds before the red flag came out.
Championship leader Jean-Eric Vergne had a difficult session and finished fourth fastest, as the Frenchman locked up and went straight on at Turn 6 and Turn 14.
Sebastien Buemi ended in fifth with Andre Lotterer in sixth and Vergne’s title rival Felix Rosenqvist in seventh.
