British driver Sam Bird has told Formula E Zone how important it is to have a good working relationship with your engineers in Formula E.

As each car is identical in Formula E, the information flow between drivers and engineers are crucial in finding any advantages against their competitors in the inaugural Formula E season.

Sam also explains that as the Formula E grid is so competitive, that the relationship between your engineers becomes extremely important.

“All the drivers are at a level at which they can perform within a couple of tenths of each other, so working together with your engineer and having the engineer that can work the best with their driver  is extremely important. Having a good relationship between a driver and engineer is normally a winning one.” said Sam Bird.

The communication between Sam Bird and his engineers put the English driver in a position to win the Putrajaya ePrix by some margin. However, despite Sam being delighted with his win, the former Mercedes test driver is fully focused on winning this years championship.

“I was delighted, the fact that we have come so far as a team in a short space of time is very good. We have been working extremely hard since the middle of last year and that all came together with a win at the second ever Formula E race. But we want more than that, we want more race victories and push for the drivers and the constructors title as well and that is a realistic aim at this point.” said Bird.

The Virgin Racing driver was also praised the work being done by Greenpower and Formula E in supporting students in becoming engineers in the future.

“It’s a great program to be involved in, the more of the programs that happen globally the better and Formula E getting involved and supporting something like this is not only looking after the drivers but looking after potential new budding engineers, that could be pioneers in the future is very important.” said the 28 year old.
