After starting at the back of the grid after a bad qualifying session, Jean-Eric Vergne was very pleased with the outcome of his race in Punta del Este. The Frenchman finished in seventh, collecting valuable points for his DS Virgin team.
“I don’t think my race could have gone much better after starting at the back of the grid”, Vergne says. “I drove hard and had a lot of fun with what was in front of me. It was a great effort from the team.”
Vergne used his FanBoost on lap 26 of 33 to pass Stephane Sarrazin (Venturi) and took profit of his rival Nelson Piquet jr. crashing out of the race in the final lap.
His team mate Sam Bird had no luck however, retiring on lap 19 after running into issues with his battery management system.
“The luck we had in Malaysia was not at our side today”, Bird deduces. “It has been a chaotic race with a lot of action. I had to use the tyres from Putrajaya in my first stint as we had no set of rubber left. After my pitstop my dash told me I had a BMS error, so I shut it down. I couldn’t get it started again.”
Both Vergne and Bird are testing their DSV-01 car on the Punta del Este circuit today.
