Dragon Racing have re-signed Argentinian Jose Maria Lopez for their season five Formula E title assault.
The Toyota LMP1 WEC driver made his debut for DS Virgin Racing in the third season of the championship, but at the start of the following season he was left without a drive until Neel Jani’s departure from Dragon Racing after the opening two rounds in Hong Kong created an opportunity which he took. Lopez finished season four in 17th place with fourteen points to his name.
“I am really excited to continue with the team and I am looking forward to being on the track to achieve our objectives,” explained the three-time world touring car champion.
“The atmosphere (at Dragon) is great! The team has evolved so much since I joined last year, and now we have the new Gen2 car, so we are starting fresh, and I can’t wait to be on track with the team for the first race in Riyadh.
“(My) expectations are to be competitive from the start to achieve top spot results. The team has put in an incredible effort during this, and I am looking forward to working with them to keep improving and evolving throughout the season.”
Team owner and principal Jay Penske was enthusiastic about his team and driver’s chances after a difficult season in which the team finished 9th in constructors championship.
“José showed a lot of promise in Season 4 and has been an invaluable asset in the development of the package for Season 5,” he said.
“He is a real racer, and I am confident that his capabilities, paired with the evolution of our engineering organisation will prove to be a winning formula this season. I look forward to seeing the results.”
Dragon have yet to announce who will be partnering Lopez in the second Dragon seat, but it expected that Jerome D’Ambrosio, who scored the team’s sole podium of season four in Zurich, will not be retained.
