Lucas Di Grassi has been excluded from qualifying after completing his in-lap slower than the allowed time permitted by the FIA.
The incident occurred after he set his flying lap in group qualifying. The FIA set a time of 1:21:000 to stay under while the drivers do their in-laps. However, Di Grassi was slower than this time which has lead to the penalty. Di Grassi’s time has not yet been released by the FIA.
A statement from the FIA read. “The driver used more brakes in the “inlap” during Qualifying then in the flying lap without any reason.”
Di Grassi will now start from the back of the field promoting Sebastien Buemi to pole position.
Buemi will now start alongside Mahindra Racing’s Pascal Wehrlein on the front row.
Stoffel Vandoorne, another star of qualifying in Chile, was demoted one position on the grid for failing to stop for a red light on his way to the track to start his Super Pole effort, will begin from his original fifth place spot.
