Formula E could see pit stops return to the series in GEN 3, as the all-electric championship will introduce fast charging.
The electric championship is hopeful to achieve charging times of 30 seconds, which will allow the option for Williams Advanced engineering, who won the tender for the GEN 3 battery, to create a battery that has a lower range in order to show off it’s fast charging capabilities.
Mahindra Racing Team Principal Dilbagh Gill explained that a smaller battery will also decrease the weight of the cars, which allows the cars to achieve faster laptimes.
“What we need to realise with fast charging the range of the battery can come done,” said Gill. “So you can have a much lighter battery.
“You don’t have to have a battery that will last the whole race, especially if you can fill it up more frequently during the race. So we may be looking at lighter cars for Gen 3 because you can charge the battery much faster. So we can go for a smaller battery and have a lighter car; the options at the moment are endless.”
When we asked Gill about the potential of seeing one or two pit stops in a race, he admitted that anything could happen with the race format in Gen 3, but reiterated that nothing had been decided yet in how Formula E will go racing in the 2022/2023 season.
“I don’t know the format that Formula E will create, but everything is a possibility at the moment. We might not see any stops in the race, we could see one-stop or even two-stop races, we just don’t know yet.
“The use of fast charging could make Formula E really interesting going forward and I am excited to see what the series will do with this potential.”
Gill believes that it is important that Formula E starts to show the world that it’s capable of utilising fast charging, and he thinks that the new GEN 3 rules will be focused around fast charging,
“I believe it is important to show the world fast charging, and I think the Gen 3 story will be about fast charging. Gen 1 was about speed, and Gen 2 was about the battery and range. So Gen 3 should be about fast charging.
“The technology looks incredible because in the time it takes to fill your car with petrol, you could have fully recharged your car and be on your way again. That is why it is important to show the world fast charging.”
