Panasonic Jaguar Racing have confirmed that Sam Bird will join their squad from season seven replacing James Calado.
The nine-time race winner has spent his whole career to date at Virgin since the inurgural Formula E race in 2014 and is the only driver so far to win a race in every season of the ABB Formula E Championship.
Despite winning the opening round of the season, Bird currently lies 10th in the championship after only two points finishes.
“I am really looking forward to a new chapter in my Formula E career with Panasonic Jaguar Racing,” said Bird. “I have watched Jaguar’s growth and progress in the series and am very proud to be driving for an iconic British brand with such a successful racing DNA and joining an incredible list of drivers that have raced for the brand.”
Sam also took the time to praise his current team, Envision Virgin Racing.
“I want to thank Envision Virgin Racing for everything we have achieved together and wish them well for the future.”
Rumours have been circulating for many a year that Bird would switch to Jaguar, and Team Director James Barclay belives that the team now have one of the strongest line ups in the series and are eyeing up both tritle for the first World Championship series next year.
“With extremely close competition it is clear that to be successful in Formula E you need two drivers who can be competing for podiums at every race. We now have two proven race winners that are capable of enabling us to challenge for both team and driver championship titles next season.”
