The Gen 2 EVO car will not feature in Formula E as the teams agreed to scrap the new design, which was originally set to be introduced in the 2021/2022 season.
The new bodywork was set to be introduced for the 2020/21 season but was delayed by one year amid initial cost-saving measures introduced in April.
Now the teams have agreed to cancel the new Gen 2 EVO bodywork altogether, as Formula E is set to introduce its Gen 3 car for the 2022/2023 season.
One of the main reasons why the GEN 2 EVO car has been abolished is due to how expensive it was; it would have cost the teams $380,000 to run it for one season.
Venturi Team Principal Susie Wolff was in favour of scrapping the Gen 2 EVO car as part of the series efforts to reduce costs for the teams in order to make the series more sustainable.
“The Gen 2 EVO has been confirmed as not going ahead,” said Wolff. “This is a decision which I was fully in support of alongside most of the other teams as it did not align with Formula E’s new cost-saving procedures that they introduced.
“We were only going to use it for one season as it was delayed until in 2021/2022 season, therefore the teams came together and decided it was too costly to use for one season.”
Formula E will continue with the original Gen 2 until the end of the electric series’ ninth season. Formula E will then switch to its Gen 3 design for the 2022/2023 season.
