Frijns leads Virgin 1-3 in final Diriyah practice

Robin Frijns set a new lap record of a 1:07.294 to top the final practice session in Diriyah ahead of this evening’s second race. Nyck De Vries, who had lead every session until this point, settled for second, one and a half tenths behind his compatriot, with Frijns’ teammate Nick Cassidy in third.

Oliver Rowland finished just 0.012 behind De Vries in fourth, with Antonio Felix da Costa in fifth. Edoardo Mortara ended sixth, but when practicing his start at the end of the session, he went straight on at Turn 18 and failed to stop. We are yet to have word on what happened and whether Mortara will make it out for qualifying.

Stoffel Vandoorne ended seventh ahead of Sebastian Buemi and Sam Bird, all of whom were within five tenths of session topping Frijns, with Lucas Di Grassi rounding out the top ten.

Oliver Turvey ended 11th ahead of Jake Dennis, with Rene Rast in 13th and Jean Eric Vergne in 14th. Tom Blomqvist ended 15th ahead of Norman Nato, with Max Guenther over a second off the pace in 17th.

Pascal Wehrlein ended 18th for Porsche ahead of Alex Lynn, who will take a 3-place grid penalty for this evening’s race. Nico Mueller was 20th ahead of Mitch Evans, Alexander Sims and Sergio Sette Camara in 23rd.

Andre Lotterer rounded out the field, but crashed early on at Turn 12 and 13, bringing out the red flag, and was over two and a half seconds away from session topping Frijns.
