Frijns quickest in a halted First Practice

Robin Frijns has ended the first practice session fastest in a session that ended 15 minutes early due to Sam Bird causing a red flag after crashing at the final corner.

The Brit clipped the inside wall of the final corner and slammed straight into the barrier on the exit of the turn that leads onto the start/finish straight. The session was unbale to be restarted or extended due to the damage caused to the TecPro barrier.

Therefore, Frijns ended the session fastest for Envision Virgin Racing after setting a 1.10.282. Oliver Turvey was second for the NIO 333 team. The Brit set a 1.10.377.

Maximillian Gunther was third for BMW after slapping at a time of a 1.10.701. Lucas Di Grassi ended the session fourth fastest in his Audi. The Audi pair of Rene Rast and Di Grassi did top timesheets during the early part of the session.

Pascal Wehrlein was sixth for Porsche ahead of Dragon Racing’s new recruit Joel Eriksson who finished in seventh. Eriksson will race in the remaining races of the season after replacing the outgoing Nico Muller.

Stoffel Vandoorne was seventh for Mercedes ahead of Mitch Evans in eighth. Sébastien Buemi was ninth and Sergio Sette Camara was tenth in the second Dragon.

With the teams losing 15 minutes of running, the session times are not 100% reliable of what we could see heading into qualifying later today.

The other incidents that happened in the session were caused by Alex Lynn who stopped at Turn 1 after losing drive, but was able to get going, and Antonio Felix Da Costa also had a spin at Turn 14.
