Vergne pips Frijns to first honours in opening practice

DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne has topped the opening practice session for this weekend’s London E-Prix at ExCeL, setting a 1:21.650, just four thousandths of a second quicker than Robin Frijns in second.

Championship leader Sam Bird, reigning champion Antonio Felix da Costa, as well as Mitch Evans, all set a best lap time within a tenth of Vergne’s to complete the top five.

Alex Lynn finished sixth, with the Mercedes Benz EQ drivers of Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck De Vries sandwiching Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein in seventh and ninth. Sérgio Sette Câmara completed the top ten.

Edoardo Mortara ended the session eleventh ahead of Jake Dennis. Andre Lotterer was the final driver to be within half a second of Vergne, with Norman Nato in fourteenth, and Rene Rast in fifteenth.

Joel Eriksson ended the session sixteenth, ahead of Lucas Di Grassi and Maximilian Guenther, while Oliver Rowland and Nick Cassidy completed the top 20.

The bottom four consisted of three British drivers, with Alexander Sims and Tom Blomqvist joined by Switzerland’s Sebastien Buemi, whilst rounding out the field in twenty fourth position was Oliver Turvey; the only driver over a second away from Vergne’s fastest time.

Free practice two begins at 9 AM BST on Saturday morning.
