Dragon Penske Autosport have announced that Formula 1 driver Antonio Giovinazzi will race for them in season eight, just hours after it was announced the Italian would be replaced at Alfa Romeo for the 2022 season.
Giovinazzi, who has been in Formula 1 with Alfa since 2019, was announced to be replaced at the team by Chinese F2 driver Guyanu Zhou this morning. Giovinazzi boasts eight F1 points finishes as well as multiple top ten qualifying appearances. The 27-year-old also challenged Formula E stand-in driver Pierre Gasly to the 2016 GP2 championship, in which he missed out on the title by just eight points.
Giovinazzi has prior Formula E experience when he drove the Gen 1 car for the then DS Virgin Racing squad where he partnered his Dragon predecessor Joel Eriksson. The Italian ended his two sessions in fifth and seventh respectively.
“As soon as it was made public that I would not be in Formula One next year, I have decided to participate in the Formula E world championship.” Announced the Italian. “It is a category which I always followed, I am thrilled to be part of DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT in this all electric racing series which I have already tested three years ago. I would like to thank Jay Penske who immediately showed great interest for having me on board.”
Penske stated that he is proud to have Antonio in the team and believes that the team now has one of the strongest line ups in Formula E.
Giovinazzi confirmed that he would be present at the Valencia test which concludes just before his penultimate Formula 1 commitment in Saudi Arabia.
Giovinazzi will partner Sergio Sette Camara, who was announced to continue with the squad earlier this week.
