Bird tops the first morning of pre-season in Valencia

Jaguar Racing’s Sam Bird topped the times in the opening session of this week’s pre-season test. The Brit set a 1:27.169, a tenth quicker than Venturi new boy Lucas Di Grassi and Bird’s former teammate Robin Frijns.

Edoardo Mortara ended fourth making it a solid morning for the Rokit Venturi team, with Antonio Felix da Costa completing the top five. Da Costa was one of numerous drivers, including Frijns and Mahindra’s Oliver Rowland to rack up a 5 minute session ban for repeated exceeding track limits.

Rowland would finish sixth ahead of Mitch Evans and Jake Dennis, with the two Mercedes EQ cars of Nyck De Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne completing the top ten.

Max Guenther would end his first session for Nissan e.dams in 11th, with Nick Cassidy in 12th and the other Nissan of Sebastien Buemi in 13th. Sergio Sette Camara and Alexander Sims completed the top 15.

Pascal Wehrlein and Jean-Eric Vergne were 16th and 17th, with Oliver Turvey 18th. Andre Lotterer was 19th ahead of the three rookies for the 2022 season, Oliver Askew driving in the Andretti, Antonio Giovinazzi the current Alfa Romeo F1 driver who is in the Dragon, and Dan Ticktum, who completed the field in his NIO333 car.
