Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns ended the day fastest in Valencia in a session which only lasted an hour and a quarter following Edoardo Mortara stoppage, as well as the teams trialled the new qualifying format earlier in the day.
Frijns set a 1.26.968 which was the fastest lap of the day, two-tenths quicker than Sam Bird’s 1.27.169 that he set in the three-hour morning session.
Jean-Eric Vergne finished in second ahead of his teammate Antonio Felix Da Costa. Both drivers were two tenths behind Frijns. The Ds Teceetah drivers were seperated by two thousands of a second.
Nick Cassidy ended the session fourth fastest in the second Envision car. Andre Lotterer was fifth for Porsche, with Mitch Evans in sixth for Jaguar.
Jake Dennis was seventh for Andretti and the Nissan e.dams of Sebastien Buemi and Max Guenther were eigith and ninth ahead of Pascal Wehrlein who completed the top ten.
Mortara ended 11th despite bringing out the red flag, Alexander Sims 12th, Sam Bird and Lucas Di Grassi 13th and 14th, with Oliver Askew in the second Andretti claiming his role as top rookie for the second session running.
Oliver Rowland was 16th in his debut outing with Mahindra with Sergio Sette Camara in 17th, Dan Ticktum lifted himself up to 18th in the NIO 333, beating his teammate Oliver Turvey who was 19th. Antonio Giovinazzi was 20th for Dragon ahead of the two Mercedes EQs of Stoffel Vandoorne and World Champion Nyck De Vries, who propped up the table on the opening day of pre-season testing.
