On Tuesday Maserati officially announced that they will be entering Formula E in season 9, the first season for the new Gen 3 car, making them the first Italian manufacturer to enter the championship.

It is Maserati’s first motorsports entry since winning the FIA GT1 title in 2010 with the MC12, and their first works single seater campaign since Juan Manuel Fangio won his fifth and final Formula One driver’s title at the wheel of a Maserati 250F in 1957.

Maserati is part of the Stellantis group: A cross-border merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and the Peugeot Société Anonyme Group. The French side of the partnership already has a presence within Formula E in the form of sister brand DS Automobiles, which is currently partnered with the Techeetah team, and it is likely that Maserati will run rebadged DS powertrains for their debut season.

It is also expected that Maserati will form a partnership with an existing team, rather than taking over the vacant slot on the grid left by the recent departure of Audi. This means there is still a place for the McLaren Group to enter, with a decision on whether or not to take up their 2021 option to enter Formula E set to be made in the first quarter of 2022.
