Nick Cassidy has won the Saturday New York E-Prix, which was red flagged after conditions became undrivable in the rain, which caused a three-car pile with the top three.
The rain started to fall with 13 minutes remaining in the race, but the conditions quickly became worse at a rapid rate which forced the race director to throw the full-course yellow with seven minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the race.
The full course yellow came out too late for race leader Cassidy however, as the New Zealander hit a puddle and aquaplaned off into the wall at Turn 6.
Second place man Lucas Di Grassi joined him at the scene of the accident, as well as Stoffel Vandoorne, who was in fourth.
Robin Frijns was the only driver to avoid the carnage at Turn 6 and managed to steer his car through the chicane.
Edoardo Mortara also fell foul to the conditions but was able to save the car from joining the trio in the wall. He damaged the front wing after he hit the wall.
Pascal Wehrlein was hit from behind by Sebastien Buemi after the Nissan driver aquaplaned into the Porsche driver, which destroyed both cars.
The race was then red flagged due to the conditions and the number of wrecked cars stuck on the track. However, the race director decided that the conditions were too bad to continue and declared the end of the race despite there being 7 minutes left on the clock.
Under the rules, the result was taken from the previous two laps, which meant that Nick Cassidy was declared the race winner, with Lucas Di Grassi in second and Robin Frijns in third.
At the start of the race, Cassidy had a great start from pole position. He held the lead, while Vandoorne, who started in second, fell down to the order to fourth after he was passed by Di Grassi and Buemi.
Jean-Eric Vergne’s miserable day continued after starting from P16. He was hit from behind by Mitch Evans at Turn 6 on lap 1.
Attack Mode dominated the main position changes during the race, as Jake Dennis proved that the undercut was more powerful than the overcut due to how hard it is to overtake at the New York E-Prix circuit.
Dennis moved from P10 up to P6 during the first Attack Mode period. The leading bunch swapped positions during the Attack Mode phase, but Cassidy remained in the lead after the Attack Mode period.
He was helped by Di Grassi being held up by Vandoorne, who hadn’t taken his second Attack Mode. That allowed Cassidy to build a gap over Di Grassi before the rain came.
Vandoorne tried the overcut on Di Grassi in the second Attack Mode phase but failed to pass the Brazilian, but he was able to use his FanBoost to pass the Di Grassi to get up into second.
However, the next lap Di Grassi lunged down the inside at Turn 1 to move into second, but his aggressive move forced Vandoorne wide and allowed Frijns to jump past into third.
Then the rain came and caused chaos in the final ten minutes of the race, which ultimately saw the race get red flagged, and the victory was given to Nick Cassidy.
Di Grassi finished in second, with Frijns third and Vandoorne fourth. Mortara was fifth after a great use of his second Attack Mode to fight from ninth place to fifth.
Buemi was sixth for Nissan, while Wehrlein was seventh for Porsche. Jake Dennis finished in eighth despite his good showing early in the race.
Sam Bird was ninth for Jaguar, and Nyck De Vries was tenth.
