Pascal Wehrlein was buoyant after he claimed victory in the opening round of the Formula E season in Mexico.

The Porsche driver praised all the hard work that his German team has done over the off-season.

The 29-year-old had to survive an investigation by the stewards for using the wrong pedal map at the start of the race. However, it was deemed that Wehrlein had done nothing wrong at the start of the race and was able to keep his victory.

“It’s fantastic to start the season with a win,” said Wehrlein. “We had a very strong weekend. After last season, we spent a huge amount of time analysing everything and we put our focus on preparing for the qualifying.

“Our pole today is proof that this hard work has paid off. A big thanks to my team for this.”

“It was a tough race because we were leading most of the race and that’s not very efficient for energy – but every lap was like a qualifying lap, trying to maximise speed.

“I saw a small mistake behind me which created a small gap, and from then I think it was pretty controlled.”

Team Principal Florian Modlinger was delighted with Wehrlein’s win and explained that Antonio Felix Da Costa did not find the sweet spot with the car setup this weekend.

“A huge thank you to the team for this tremendous effort,” said Modlinger. “What a great start to the season with Pascal’s outstanding drive.

“After a flawless qualifying performance, he started from pole and with a super strategy, was extremely focused in the race.

“António wasn’t completely happy with the car in qualifying. He made up a few positions in the race before having to retire due to suspension damage.

“The qualification didn’t run perfectly for our customer team Andretti Formula E, however in the race, Jake and Norman battled their way up the order and into the points. Pascal’s victory outshines everything.”
