Pascal Wehrlein secured his second pole position of the season in Sao Paulo after pipping Stoffel Vandoorne in the final.
The Porsche driver took pole by two-thousandths of a second, which was enough to clinch three extra championship points for pole position. The German driver set a 1:12.779, whereas Vandoorne set a 1:12.781.
Maximilian Gunther qualified third but will take a 40-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox and inverter. The Maserati driver will start last and will have a time penalty in the race as well for not taking the full amount of his penalty.
Jean-Eric Vergne qualified in fourth, but will start in third place. He lost out to his teammate Vandoorne in the sem-finals.
Mitch Evans lost out to Vandoorne in the quarter-finals. He was the quickest quarter-finalist loser which meant he qualified in fifth place, but will start the race in fourth thanks to Gunther’s penalty.
Sam Bird qualified in 6th place after he lost out to Gunther in the quarter-final. Edoardo Mortara qualified in seventh for Mahindra Racing.
Nico Muler qualified eighth. He finished fourth in group qualifying but hit the wall on his fastest lap, and was unable to complete the rest of qualifying.
Nick Cassidy didn’t make the duels missing out by nine thousandths of a second Muller in the ABT Cupra.
The Kiwi was furious on the radio. The Jaguar driver was one of the first drivers over the line, as the track slightly evolved across the final lap which caused him to miss out. He will start the race from 9th place.
Reigning Champion Jake Dennis missed out on the duels by two-tenths and will have to start the race in tenth.
Oliver Rowland will start the race just outside the top ten for Nissan. Jake Hughes will start in 12th place in the second McLaren car.
Nyck De Vries completed a successful qualifying for Mahindra. The season seven champion will start in 13th.
Sacha Fenestraz will start in 14th ahead of Lucas Di Grassi who will start in 15th. Maserati’s Jehan Daruvala will start in 16th.
Envision Racing had a terrible qualifying session. The Jaguar-powered cars could only manage 17th for Robin Frijns and 18th for Sebastien Buemi.
Sergio Sette Camara will start in 19th for ERT. The Brazilian driver out-qualified his teammate in his home race, as Dan Ticktum starts 20th.
Norman Nato failed to cross the line in time to start his final lap in Group A, and that mistake was costly as the Andretti driver will start on the back row of the grid in 21st ahead of Gunther.
