Edoardo Mortara claimed pole position for Sunday’s Tokyo E-Prix with a commanding qualifying performance, setting a lap more than six tenths of a second quicker than António Félix da Costa in the final duel.
The Mahindra driver produced a blistering 1:12.341 to secure the three championship points on offer, while da Costa could only manage a 1:13.021.
After narrowly missing out on pole to Jake Dennis on Saturday, Mortara bounced back in emphatic fashion. The pole position also moves the Swiss driver ahead of da Costa into fifth place in the Drivers’ Championship.
Saturday’s race winner Dan Ticktum will line up third after losing to Mortara in the semi-finals, while Taylor Barnard starts fourth following his defeat to da Costa.
Mahindra enjoyed an outstanding qualifying session, with Nyck de Vries securing fifth on the grid. Norman Nato will start sixth for Nissan.
Championship leader Mitch Evans qualified seventh, with reigning World Champion Oliver Rowland alongside him in eighth.
Further back, title contender Pascal Wehrlein could only manage 11th after failing to reach the qualifying duels, while Saturday’s polesitter Jake Dennis endured a disappointing session and will start from 18th on the grid.
