During Formula E’s eight-week break between races, the series held its highly publicised Gen3 Evo sessions, giving 11 celebrities—including Sergio Agüero and Tom Felton—the chance to drive the GEN 3 EVO Formula E car. While some fans viewed the event as little more than a publicity stunt, it may have had a far more strategic purpose: testing the Miami International Autodrome as a potential venue for next season’s Miami E-Prix.
Formula E is set to race at Homestead-Miami Speedway on April 12, but series co-founder Alberto Longo revealed to Formula E Zone that the championship is considering a move to the Miami F1 track for the 2025/26 season. The Gen3 Evo sessions, which took place on a shortened version of that circuit, provided a valuable opportunity to assess whether the track is a viable option for the series.
Longo explained the reasoning behind choosing Homestead for this year while keeping future Miami options open:
“The option that we had, and definitely we believed that it was better to be racing in Homestead in year one, even though we keep on having conversations with not only Hard Rock Cafe Stadium, but with some other potential [venues] in Miami as well for the future. But for this year, we wanted to be back in Miami, and that was basically the best way possible for us to be back there.”
Beyond evaluating how the Gen3 Evo car performs on the track, the sessions allowed Formula E officials, including Longo and CEO Jeff Dodds, to explore different potential layouts and negotiate a possible deal for the switch. One major drawback of Homestead Speedway is its location—about an hour from downtown Miami—making it less accessible for fans. In contrast, the Miami International Autodrome is situated within the city, providing a much more convenient and attractive venue.
Will Mr. Beast’s Crash Have a Lasting Impact on Formula E?
One of the most talked-about moments from the Gen3 Evo sessions was YouTuber MrBeast’s crash in the Formula E car. With nearly 400 million subscribers, MrBeast has an enormous reach, and his involvement in the event has the potential to bring Formula E into the spotlight. However, for this to have a real impact, Formula E must work strategically with him.
If MrBeast releases his videos on his own accord, that may not line up with a Formula E even, which could cause any hype he generates to fade quickly. The best approach would be for Formula E to coordinate with MrBeast to ensure the videos are released ahead of the Miami E-Prix, allowing his massive audience to tune into the race while their excitement is still high.
To maximise the opportunity, Formula E should also invite MrBeast to the Miami E-Prix and organize a meet-and-greet session. This could boost ticket sales, especially if the session is strategically scheduled after the race. That way, potential new fans introduced to the series by MrBeast would have the chance to see the cars in action before meeting him.
If Formula E successfully capitalises on MrBeast’s involvement—both through the documentary footage and well-timed video releases—the Gen3 Evo sessions could turn out to be a major success. Not only could they help bring in new fans, but they may also play a key role in securing a move to the Miami International Autodrome for next season. By combining these elements, Formula E has a golden opportunity to grow its audience and cement Miami as a major destination on its calendar.
