Nyck de Vries beat Mahindra teammate Edoardo Mortara to pole position for the London E-Prix, setting a new track record in the process with a 1:06.925.
Mahindra struggled in qualifying for yesterday’s race despite showing strong pace during practice, but the team reset ahead of today’s session and adopted a different strategy to ensure it converted its speed into a front-row lockout.
Championship leader Pascal Wehrlein will start third for Porsche after losing out to de Vries in the semi-final stage. His teammate Nico Müller will line up alongside him on the second row.
Mitch Evans, who faces a major challenge to become world champion for the first time, qualified sixth. The Jaguar driver is currently 21 points behind Wehrlein in the standings.
It was a disastrous session for Jake Dennis, who sits second in the championship and just five points behind Wehrlein. The Andretti driver will start from the eighth row, leaving him with a significant task if he is to close the gap in the title fight.
