Pascal Wehrlein converted pole position into victory in the opening race of the season-ending London E-Prix, taking control of the Formula E drivers’ championship with just one race remaining.
The Porsche driver led for much of the race and was able to build a comfortable advantage at the front, helped by teammate Nico Müller holding up the chasing pack during the opening stages. Müller’s pace allowed Wehrlein to establish a gap while the cars behind battled for position.
Mitch Evans was the main driver attempting to challenge the Porsche duo. The Jaguar driver initially followed closely behind Müller before opting to take his mandatory Pit Boost at the end of Lap 16. Evans was hoping to use the stop to undercut both Porsche drivers and gain track position.
However, his strategy was badly affected by a Full Course Yellow caused by Lucas di Grassi crashing. The neutralisation gave Wehrlein and several other drivers the opportunity to take their Pit Boost with significantly less time lost than Evans had suffered.
The timing of the Full Course Yellow proved to be another major blow to Evans’ championship hopes. Wehrlein was able to extend his advantage at the front, while Evans and Müller, who both pitted a lap after the Jaguar, dropped towards the bottom of the top ten.
Despite starting fifth, championship leader Jake Dennis produced a strong drive through the field. The British driver made his way into second place by the chequered flag, limiting the damage to his championship lead. However, Wehrlein’s victory means the Porsche driver now holds a five-point advantage over Dennis heading into Sunday’s season finale.
The closing stages of the race were particularly chaotic, with several drivers battling for position as the field bunched up behind the leaders. António Félix da Costa emerged from the late drama to secure third place and complete the podium.
Sébastien Buemi finished fourth for Envision Racing, while Taylor Barnard produced another strong performance to take fifth place. The result continues what has been an impressive season for the young driver.
Evans was unable to recover from the strategic setback and eventually had to settle for eighth place. The result leaves him 21 points behind Wehrlein in the championship standings, meaning his title hopes have taken another significant hit with just one race remaining.
With Wehrlein now leading Dennis by five points and Evans facing a 21-point deficit, the championship will be decided in Sunday’s final race at the ExCeL Centre. After a dramatic opening London E-Prix, the season finale promises another tense battle for the Formula E crown.
