Mitch Evans is hopeful that he and Nick Cassidy can create more interest in cities in the Australasia region this season.

Both Kiwi drivers will be fighting for the championship this season for the Jaguar team which has increased the popularity of the series in Australia and New Zealand.

Evans admitted that there was interest from the New Zealand city of Auckland in 2018, but unfortunately, their bid didn’t materialise into anything substantial.

“It would really help if we got a race into Australasia,” said Evans. “I think that it will really help take the next step in raising awareness and building the interest levels in the championship back home and in Australia.

“Auckland got very close to hosting a race, they did a feasibility test back in 2018. However, sadly there were a couple of factors from Auckland’s side that meant it couldn’t happen. There was something around the Americas Cup that also stopped progress. But Auckland came close to hosting an event.

“I think we need an event like Formula E in the region. Going to Sydney or Melbourne would be huge to create that awareness of the championship.

The 29-year-old is confident that if he and Nick Cassidy continue to be in the hunt for title this season it could help build interest in the region.

“It is not going to hurt our chances of getting a race in one of those cities if me and Nick perform well in the series. I certainly think that it is possible, but as with hosting a motorsport event, especially on street tracks is that you need the right people to be able to come together and get it done.

“You need people to see the vision and what we want to achieve. It is never straightforward though, and I wouldn’t want us to get something on the calendar and then see the race called off like we have seen in the past.

“I reckon it will only be a matter of time before we will be racing in that part of the world.”
