Pascal Wehrlein turned pole position into a commanding victory in the opening race of this weekend’s Shanghai E-Prix after mastering changing conditions at the Shanghai International Circuit.

With severe weather forecast, the entire day’s schedule was brought forward by three hours. Although the race began on a dry track, light rain started to fall just before the start, prompting drivers to aggressively fight for track position in anticipation of heavier showers.

By the conclusion of lap 18, the expected downpour had still not arrived, with every driver having completed their mandatory Pit Boost stop. One lap later, however, the weather changed dramatically as torrential rain swept across the circuit, forcing race control to deploy the safety car.

Following a four-lap neutralisation, Wehrlein controlled the restart perfectly, quickly pulling clear of the field to secure victory by several seconds. Championship leader Mitch Evans, who lined up alongside Wehrlein on the front row, slipped backwards in the wet conditions to finish eighth, seeing his advantage at the top of the standings reduced from 19 points to just three over the Porsche driver.

António Félix da Costa claimed second place, while Jake Dennis backed up his victory in Sanya with another podium finish in third.

Felipe Drugovich completed a strong day for Andretti by taking fourth, while Nyck de Vries delivered fifth place for Mahindra.

It proved to be a frustrating afternoon for fellow title challengers Edoardo Mortara and Oliver Rowland, who could only manage 10th and 13th respectively.
