Sam Bird ended a shortened practice session fastest after Edorado Mortara stopped with six minutes to go in Sao Paulo.

It was an eventful session that saw Mitch Evans get next to no running after a front driveshaft issue curtailed the Jaguar drivers running after he finished fastest in FP1 yesterday.

Mortara came to a halt on the exit of Turn 3 after his steering wheel told the Mahindra driver to stop immediately on track.

The session was red-flagged, but the drivers were able to go back out again to do a practice start, as the green light went on with 30 seconds left in the session.

Bird set a 1:12.773 to finish the session quickest.  He was one-tenth quicker than Stoffel Vandoorne in the Ds Penske.

Oliver Rowland was third fastest for Nissan after setting a 1:12.938. Reigning world Champion Jake Dennis finished the session in fourth place for Andretti.

Pascal Wehrlein was fifth fastest with Porsche. The German driver was two-tenths off Bird’s quickest time. Antonio Felix Da Costa was sixth quickest in the second Porsche.

Nyck De Vries ended the session in seventh ahead of Sergio Sette Camara and Norman Nato.

Jehan Daruvala rounded out the top ten for Maserati. The Indian driver was four and a half tenths of Bird’s lap time.

Sacha Fenestraz was 11th quickest, ahead of Nick Cassidy who was 12th for Jaguar. Robin Frijns was 13th. The Dutchman was ahead of his teammate Sebastien Buemi who finished 14th.

Maximilian Gunther has a 20-place grid penalty after changing a gearbox before the start of FP2. The Maserati driver ended the session in 15th.

Nico Muller was 16th in the ABT Cupra. He finished ahead of Mortara who caused the red flag at the end of the session after stopping on track.

Lucas Di Grassi was 18th quickest ahead of Jake Hughes, Jean-Eric Vergne and Dan Ticktum.

Evans completed a couple of installation laps after returning to the pits at the start of the session.
